A few translation opportunities, seen recently around the web:

An advertisement in the Guardian for an experienced Project Manager in London. Posted today. No deadline given.

The company Synonyme in Madrid is advertising for a multitasking English native speaker with French, German or Spanish as interpreter, translator and project manager. Also looking for conference interpreters. Contact a.edwards at synonyme.net. Found on the website of the Chartered Institute of Linguists; other positions also advertised.

The pharmaceutical company Roche is looking for an English Sprachexperte for their language service in Basel (German-English translation, translation revision, etc.). Found via the ITI website. Further details here.

Seen on the BDÜE website (job postings can be found under Aktuelles):
The company Comlogos is looking for a project manager based in Stuttgart. The company also seems from their website to offer internships. Other posts also regularly advertised.

In Europe, the EPSO competitions for Estonian, Irish, Latvian and Portuguese translators close on 14 August. The link is here. The deadline for translation traineeships in the European institutions beginning in March 2013 is 31 August. There are two rounds of these a year; more information here.

Two PhD studentships at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University for the academic year 2012-13. The scholarships cover fees and maintenance for the first year of study; may be extended subject to suitable progress, etc.

There's a PhD studentship offered in Denmark in the field of intercultural business encounters which may interest translation researchers. Deadline is imminent: 15 August.

As always, the writer of this blog makes no guarantees about, and has no vested interest in, any of these opportunities. Good luck to any of our readers who apply.

MA graduate student poster presentations, ITI conference: deadline 15 February

Hello gentle readers,

It's been a little while, what with the new year and the snow and the tottering inbox. I hope you're all well! There's a bunch of fun stuff coming up. A snippet for current students and recent graduates of MA translation programmes:

ITI is offering current or immediate past MA/MSc students the opportunity to present a poster session at the Institute’s 25th anniversary conference in Birmingham, 7-8 May 2011.
The poster session may be based on work you have done in connection with your translation and/or interpreting course, dissertation or project or on an aspect of translation and/or interpreting work that particularly interests you.
The aim of the poster sessions is to enable practising translators and interpreters to learn about ongoing research and study as part of MA/MSc courses and to give grant recipients an opportunity to meet and network with practising and established translators and interpreters.
The conference is being held at the NEC Galleries, Birmingham, which offers good road, rail and air connections.
If you would like to present your poster, please send an e-mail to education at iti.org.uk with:
Your name, university, and university department
Year of study
Title of your poster session and a short outline of the content (max 300 words)
Your daytime telephone number, email and postal address
Final date for submissions: 15 February 2011
We will select a maximum of four dissertations. We would like to include both translation and interpreting topics.
If you are selected to take part, you will be required to:
  • produce and set up a poster display illustrating your research (for tips, Google ‘poster session’ or see http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/speaking/poster/)
  • be available to discuss it with conference participants
  • give an 8-minute presentation in a conference session organised for this purpose
  • write a short article for ITI Bulletin.
You will receive £100 towards your travel, materials and expenses, and free registration for the conference day when you are presenting.
The platform presentation is scheduled for the pre-lunch session on Sunday, 8 May 2010. More information on the 2011 Conference is available at:
http://www.iti-conference.org.uk/conference-2011/

Getting into translation

Many thanks to Tanja for pointing out a really useful page on the ITI website with presentations about how to start out as a translator. I thought Sarah Griffin-Mason's presentation on getting started in translation and Anna Davies' presentation on what translation companies really want were both excellent - and lots of other informative goodies too.

Unfortunately the ITI site didn't seem to like my direct link to the page, but if you go to the ITI homepage and search for the uncommon noun 'Griffin' it should bring up a link to 'events' where you will find the list of talks. Video recordings of the talks by Sarah, Anna and others can be found here on the Routes into Languages website.

ITI event on starting work as a translator/interpreter

The ITI event 'Starting Work as a Translator or Interpreter' takes place in London on 7
June 2008. This event is being organised jointly with the University of Westminster, with
support from the national networks for translation and for interpreting, and is relevant for
undergraduates as well as anyone else interested in translation and interpreting,
including what we call 'late converters' (i.e. people who are switching from another
career). The event is free for university students and cheap for everyone else, but all
should please register in advance using the form on the ITI website
www.iti.org.uk - ITI events section.
