and marketing materials, TranslateMedia is implementing post-editing of
machine translation as part of its professional translation workflow.
This research will examine TranslateMedia’s encounters with poorly
written and non-canonical source texts, to understand
how specific features of source texts can affect the quality of MT
output, post-editing practices and translator productivity. The basic
parameters of the research are set but specific details will be decided
jointly by the student, supervisor and partner.
TranslateMedia will provide access to a range of datasets, resources
and personnel. This research will make a valuable contribution to our
understanding of the conditions in which professional translation takes
place and the changing nature of translation

Followers of this blog will have noticed it's been a bit quiet recently.<br />

Unfortunately, blogging is one of the things I found much less time for as work has got more and more hectic. This is <a href="https://www.ucu.org.uk/media/9464/Its-your-time---workload-campaign-leaflet/pdf/ucu_its_your_time-workload_flier_may18.pdf" target="_blank">one of the issues that lies behind the strike</a> (the link downloads a pdf with key issues around academic workloads).<br />
<br />
But I have found blogging hugely rewarding over the years and I want to pick it up again, and so I'm taking the opportunity of the strike to talk about movies.<br />
<br />
There's a grand tradition in Higher Education of the 'teach out' during industrial action, where students and staff come together to talk about ideas off campus as an alternative to cancelled classes and/or to crossing the picket line. I wanted to think about films that could allow us to talk through ideas about industrial action.<br />
<br />
There are more moving and entertaining films about strikes out there than we might think! The ones I know reflect my own filmgoing and TV-watching generation:<br />

<i>Brassed Off</i> (Herman 1996) is a musical about the miners' strike.<br />

The title <i>Bread and Roses</i> is based on the song of the same name, apparently originally inspired by a speech by the American union activist Rosa Schneiderman on the occasion of the 1912 Lawrence textile strike. <br />

The 2004 BBC miniseries <i>North & South</i> is a romantic drama based on Mrs
Gaskell's social realist novel about industrial unrest in the cotton
mills of the north of England. Come for Richard Armitage's brooding but beautiful baritone, stay for the friendships across strict

<i>Made in Dagenham</i> (Cole, 2010) is the story of Rita O'Grady and the women machinists at Ford in Dagenham who went on strike for equal pay in 1968, which was followed by the passing of the Equal Pay Act in 1970.<br />

(From a #filmtranslationhistory perspective I cannot help noticing that nothing is said in this vintage American trailer about the industrial action itself, though there's plenty of the Mastroianni-as-star and women-in-their-undergarments typical of contemporary US perceptions of Italian cinema). <br />

John Sayles's <i>Matewan</i> is set during a coal miners' strike in 1920 in West Virginia (see <a href="https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/6671-john-sayles-s-closet-picks" target="_blank">here</a> for Sayles talking about some of the film influences on <i>Matewan</i>, which include <i>The Organizer</i>):<br />

Kevin Brownlow's 1975 film <i>Winstanley</i>, a historical drama about Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, is <a href="https://player.bfi.org.uk/subscription/film/watch-winstanley-1975-online" target="_blank">available to watch on the BFI player</a>.<br />
<br />
For fans of Russian cinema and silent film I must mention Eistenstein's silent 1925 <i>Strike</i> and Pudovkin's 1933 silent <i>Deserter</i>, both watchable in various versions on Youtube. <br />
<br />
On Tuesday last we saw <i>Comrades</i>, directed by Bill Douglas, released in 1986, an extraordinarily beautiful and moving film about the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Run, do not walk, to see this film (though be aware that it is 183 minutes long). It has recently been re-released and looks brilliant on a big screen.<br />

On Monday afternoon I will be showing Pabst's <i>Kameradschaft [Comradeship] </i>(1931) at Twentieth Century Flicks video shop on the Christmas Steps. This is a film not about industrial action but about international solidarity between workers, which was not available for many decades but has now been re-released. The film was shot in French and German as a way of respecting both communities equally. Again, run rather than walk to see this film. It's a lost treasure, and one of the first films to be released in the UK with English subtitles (by Paul Rotha). The re-release has new subtitles. <br />

I'm thinking about a paper I'm writing for the conference <a href="http://www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/events/27373" target="_blank">Beyond Words: Multimodal Encounters in Translation</a>, which will take place in Cambridge in July 2018.<br />
<br />
Part of the paper will talk about meaning-making in typography and specifically in film intertitles and subtitles. (I've said something about this before <a href="http://www.jostrans.org/issue20/art_osullivan.php" target="_blank">here</a>)<br />

Now I have come across this splendid fansubtitled video about Thranduil and the gems of Lasgalen, from Peter Jackson's <i>Hobbit</i> adaptation. Every character gets a different subtitle typeface:<br />

The silent period was a golden era for Italian cinema, with pioneer directors like Giovanni Pastrone, whose 1914 epic Cabiria influenced filmmakers such as D.W. Griffith. Historical epics were particularly popular. This event features five restored films from the collections of the Turin Film Museum, all with a classical theme. They include Pastrone’s <i>Fall of Troy</i> (1911) and <i>The Last Days of Pompeii</i> (1910), from the novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, which was the first Italian historical epic. The programme also includes <i>Hero and Leander</i> and <i>Dido Abandoned</i> from 1910; and <i>Judas</i> from 1911.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: black;">This session problematises the role that representation has played as the driving logic of mediation behind industrial approaches to audiovisual translation during the mass media culture – characterised by the centrality of tele-cinematic commodities, the prevalence of linear models of media consumption and distribution, and the mapping of audiovisual markets onto discrete national audiences. In the post-industrial digital culture that began to crystallise a decade ago, the means of media ‘prosumption’ have become more entangled and collaborative, and brought to the fore ‘the bottom-up energy of media created by amateurs and hobbyists as a matter of course’ (Blau 20015: 3). Against this backdrop, the portability and reproducibility of media content is reshaping the media marketplace: with streaming on-demand channels of transmission becoming more ubiquitous, audiences are becoming rapidly superseded by much more fragmented and fluid ‘audienceships’ (Pérez-González 2014). Significantly, for the purposes of this session, the networked dynamics of the digital culture are favouring intervention as an alternative approach to linguistic and cultural mediation that erodes the privileged status of the original text and allows for new forms of interaction between translators and their audienceships.</span></span></div>

In this session, I will examine how audiovisual translation is quickly emerging as a community-building cultural activity, which calls for the analytical lens to be shifted away from the translation output towards the processes of organisation and deliberation that take place around this participatory activity and contribute to galvanising geographically dispersed collectivities of interest. <span style="font-size: small;">In the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, the 1623 First Folio, there’s no mention of the acting company to which Shakespeare belonged for most of his career: the King’s Men. Many accounts of the Folio suggest that it rejects the theatre itself, by redirecting Shakespeare's plays away from the stigma of performance. Nevertheless, physical copies show us how the book was used by theatres and performers from the seventeenth century onwards. In fact, the history of actors’ encounters with this book demonstrates its ongoing association with the stage in different periods. From the recently discovered copy from the Jesuit college in St Omer, to the modern commitment to Folio punctuation by many actors and companies, this lecture attempts to put the stage back into the book.</span></div>

These 2-year fellowships are funded by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme. All research areas are eligible. Applicants must either have a PhD at the time of the call deadline or at least 4 years full time research experience (inclusive of PhD). The mobility rules require that the researcher has not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date (exceptions to this apply under the career restart and reintegration panels). These are <a href="http://www.britac.ac.uk/funding/guide/pdfells.cfm" target="_blank">3-year post-doctoral fellowships</a> in subjects covered by the British Academy (arts, humanities, social sciences). Potential candidates should expect to submit an advanced draft application and CV to the School of Modern Languages by <b>14 June 2017</b>. <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-style: inherit;">Peter Bush is a freelance literary translator and scholar who lives in Oxford. He has translated fifteen works from Catalan by authors such as Empar Moliner, Najat El Hachmi, Quim Monzó, Josep Pla, Mercè Rodoreda, Joan Sales, Teresa Solana and Emili Teixidor. His translation of Pla´s </span><i>The Gray Notebook</i><span style="font-style: inherit;"> won the 2014 Ramon Llull Literary Translation Prize and he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2015 for his translation and promotion of Catalan literature. He has also won awards for his translations from Portuguese and Spanish. The project "Translating Feminism" brings together scholars from three continents wishing to pursue original, interdisciplinary research focused on the global reach of feminist writing and women’s movements. While the transformation of women’s social status is one of the most significant developments of the post-war period, little is known about the precise ways in which women’s rights campaigners across different national and cultural settings communicated with one another, read and translated each other’s texts, and locally recontextualised them. The first international workshop in Glasgow in November 2016 provided the opportunity to discuss historical findings and new theoretical approaches. These discussions will be pursued further at the second international workshop that will take place in Bern, Switzerland, June 23-24, 2017.<br />
<br />
More precisely, the forthcoming workshop will be dedicated to the materiality of feminist texts and to the material culture of feminist literary activities, with a special focus on translation. Following Roger Chartier, the meaning that readers give to a text is never detached from the material conditions in which it is produced and diffused. Chartier reminds us that the printed object is crucial to an understanding of why and how people make sense of what they read. This applies to translations in particular ways, as the physical quality of both the source text and the translation establish an (imagined) relationship between transnational and translingual writers and readers.<br />
<br />
Women’s literary activities involved producing, diffusing, reading, translating, and discussing texts from a woman’s point of view. But what was considered to be a "woman’s point of view", and how do global transfers and translations de-stabilise accepted notions thereof? Instead of studying feminism as a given system of ideas, regardless of the context of its production and reception, we aim to study the variety of material supportive of women- centred ideas, ranging from pamphlets to self-published pirated editions and to printed books, as well as the literary activities by which they are produced and transmitted. This includes the fact that, while practising what social movement theorists call 'counter-cultural retreat', when it came to literary activism, feminists did engage with a broader public, both in terms of a (potential) feminist public and the institutions and actors of the publishing market.<br />

Translating Feminism: Transfer, Transgression, Transformation (1945-1990)<br />
<br />
We invite papers that deal with different aspects of feminist text and book production, diffusion, and translation, such as:<br />
– The materiality of the printed object and the conditions of (non-)reproducibility<br />
– The economic contexts of book publishing and translation<br />
– The technical conditions of writing, translation and transnational communication transfer<br />
– Aspects of distribution<br />
– Bookshops and reading communities<br />
– The history of translation and a transnational feminist reading market<br />
<br />
Practical arrangements:<br />
Presenters will have approx. 15 minutes to discuss their paper, and panels will consist of 3-4 papers. The pre-circulation of papers is intended to foster deep engagement with each other’s work.<br />
Presenters may be asked to act as discussant for another paper. Please include the following in your proposal:<br />
– A 300-word paper abstract<br />
– A 200-word biographical statement with main publications and current affiliation<br />
– State if you are seeking funding, with reference to the following criteria: Limited funding to cover travel and accommodation is available for researchers working on temporary contracts, and for academics working outside Europe and North America.<br />

Please send your proposals to the organisers by March 15, 2017. You will be notified by mid-April 2017 and will be asked to circulate a draft of your paper by June 1. The programme will be finalised and published in the course of May 2017.<br />

As a platform for “empowering translators” (Tymoczko 2007), translation studies has developed into a discipline that encourages inclusionary approaches, culturally sensitive methodologies and agency-focused paradigms which unsettle the traditional author/translator hierarchy. However, this emphasis on the importance of “translatorship” is not always adopted within translator training programmes. We are faced with generations of translators who are not equipped with the ability to reflect critically on themselves and their works.<br />
<br />
In this ARTIS event, we offer lectures and workshops that focus on research methodologies and critically engage with the issue of translatorship on both textual and sociological levels. On the textual level, the translator’s presence can be studied, for example, through the translator’s point of view, style, ideology, without a traditional, rigid comparison with the author. On the sociological level, translators are considered influential players in the creation of the social world, as can be seen in Bourdieu’s sociological approach to translation that pinpoints translators as mobilizers of economic and symbolic capitals through their works. Both approaches highlight the significance of the role of translators in the importation and transmission of knowledge, whilst acknowledging that this is not always properly documented, and that it thus tends to be wiped out from public memory.<br />

This two-day ARTIS event is the first of its kind that is specially designed for MA students who are working on their dissertations. We also welcome PhD students and scholars who are interested in starting new research in translation studies. Participants can choose to join public lectures and panel discussions on the first day, or continue to participate in workshops led by our invited speakers on the second day. Workshop participants are required to submit an abstract for poster presentations which will take place on the second day. We invite abstracts that address or are related to the following issues:<br />

It's not strictly speaking a poem about translation, but the whole post can be considered a poetic reflection on translation, if I squint... <br />

Many people, including our colleagues, have predicted the end of translation and interpreting as professions with the advancement of automated translation and now with ever more sophisticated algorithms and artificial intelligence. Despite this ever-deepening crisis, especially with tumbling remunerations to individual practitioners, there is rapid proliferation of translation and interpreting training and programmes around the world and LSPs are sold at astonishing record sums.<br />
In this lecture, the President of FIT will draw on the experience and
learning from the 2007 global financial crisis and apply them towards
rebalancing the power dynamics within and without this critically
important profession as well as developing strategy in the face of such
disruption. <br />

He has been an interpreter for heads of state and other dignitaries. He has been involved in many international conferences, including APEC, and has accompanied many missions abroad. His specialties are law, diplomacy and international trade.<br />
A long-time member of the <a href="http://www.nzsti.org/" target="_blank">New Zealand Society of Translators and Interpreters</a> (NZSTI), he is heavily involved in professional training and setting up of professional standards and guidelines. He has been instrumental in bringing together practitioners of Maori, English, and New Zealand Sign Language. He has also been an advisor to many government departments in relation to interpreting and translation policies, access and quality issues. An opinionated advocate of professional organisations and a strong believer in trans-national and multidisciplinary co-operation, Henry has given keynote addresses in major T&I conferences in Oceania, North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America.<br />

<br />Since studying Classics at Trinity College Dublin, Irish poet Michael Longley has frequently drawn on classical models in his poetry and established allusive parallels between ancient and modern concerns. Over the course of his career he has also translated a wide variety of fellow poets, from classical authors to Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, prompting Justin Quinn to write that ‘for Longley, translation becomes a way of thinking about the world’. In this lecture he will be reading, and commenting on, his translations from Latin and Greek. He will begin with his youthful versions from Sextus Propertius and progress to later poems derived from Ovid’s <i>Metamorphoses</i> and Homer’s <i>Iliad</i> and <i>Odyssey</i>, taking in Sappho and Tibullus on the way.<br /><br />One of Britain’s finest poets, Michael Longley has received many awards for his lyrical poems about love, death, memory, history and nature, published over more than fifty years. His collection <i>Gorse Fires</i> (1991) won the Whitbread Poetry Prize, and <i>The Weather in Japan</i> (2000) won the <i>Irish Times</i> Literature Prize for Poetry, the Hawthornden Prize, and the T.S. Eliot Prize. His most recent book <i>The Stairwell</i> won the 2015 Griffin International Prize. His next collection <i>Angel Hill</i> will be published in June 2017. He was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2001, and was appointed a CBE in 2003. He was Professor of Poetry for Ireland from 2007 to 2010.<br /><br />The Sebald Lecture is given annually on an aspect of literature in translation and is named after W.G. Sebald who set up BCLT in 1989. ‘Max’ was a German writer who opted to live in the UK and continue writing in German. His novels and essays include <i>The Rings of Saturn</i>, <i>Austerlitz</i> and <i>On the Natural History of Destruction</i>, and they established him as a leading writer of the 20th century.<br />

As a happy new year greeting to all three of my faithful readers, here's a short piece from Edwin Schallert of the <i>Los Angeles Times</i>, published on 2 January 1932, a few months after subtitles had begun to appear in the United States (previously audiences had either had to speak the language in question, or make do with <a href="https://twitter.com/carol_osullivan/status/809590513632497664" target="_blank">a synopsis in the programme</a>).<br />
<br />
They were called 'superimposed titles' to differentiate them from intertitles, which were interpolated between moving picture footage, rather than superimposed. Intertitles were referred to at the time as subtitles, to add to the confusion. Reading the rather plodding explanation below, we should remember that these were viewers used to silent films, where the action had to stop when a title card appeared. The idea of a title running concurrently with the action was a bit revolutionary:<br />

<b>Superimposed Titles</b><br />
Witnessing a picture with superimposed titles, so-called, is an odd adventure. Superimposed titles are explanatory subtitles printed on scenes in the film, which translate the purport of what is being said in another language. They are being used in Europe on the American pictures. The words spoken in English are those translated into German, French or some other language, depending on what country the picture is shown in, so that its dialogue may be understood by the audience.<br />
I saw the French film, 'David Golder,' with superimposed German titles, and a knowledge of that language made it exceedingly easy to folow. The words spoken in French, which is often a difficult language to understand conversationally, acquired meaning as the picture progressed. It would seem, therefore, that the viewing of pictures with superimposed titles is an aid in acquiring a knowledge of a different tongue. Nor is it as complicated nor as distracting a method of witnessing a picture show as might be imagined. (2 January 1932, p.19)</blockquote>

<br />Abstract <br />While interest in volunteer translation and interpreting has grown noticeably in recent years, little field work has been undertaken to examine this important form of citizen media practice in violent and high risk contexts. Drawing on a recent study of the collaboration between subtitlers and filmmakers during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, this presentation will focus on the challenges posed by a fast-paced, fluid, non-hierarchical context of collaboration between relatively distinct groups (filmmakers and subtitlers) who do not interact regularly despite producing prolific output collaboratively. The discussion will also explore the difficulty of offering traditional research ‘findings’ in contexts where intense human relations and experiences are unfolding and taking unpredictable directions during the research period, rendering any notion of optimal researcher distance from the object of study both unworkable and undesirable and placing issues of trust and ethics at the centre of the research agenda.
