The plot sounds similar. Here's the NY Times review of it:

http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9D02E4DB1F3AEE3BBC4E52DFB467838D659EDE

And the IMDB entry, with details of production company and actors:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037830/

This may not be the one you're looking for, particularly since the dates don't quite match. The NY Times review is from 1946. There's a reference to a film with the same names, which was released in 1947 (http://www.terramedia.co.uk/media/film/UK_releases_1947_European.htm). I suppose it's possible it didn't make it to Ireland until the following year.

All the best

Lucy Moffattluciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07818498213704689725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1197327729373608541.post-25444769912956198212016-07-27T06:25:44.091-07:002016-07-27T06:25:44.091-07:00You may be interested in our blog Translation In M...You may be interested in our blog Translation In Mongolia - particularly 'Translation Poems Month' this month.
http://translationinmongolia.blogspot.co.uk/Chris Guinnesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10766563718458712718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1197327729373608541.post-90664552160345538832015-05-19T15:56:46.896-07:002015-05-19T15:56:46.896-07:00Thank you for your comment, Iain! The second one has a trait that I so often find tempting when I translate Pushkin myself, namely a syntactical re-arrangement to fit the iambs ("And brought to us your tablets holy"). When translating Pushkin, it's very hard to maintain a normal English word order throughout and nigh impossible not to start some line with "and" (apart from the ones that begin with "and" in the Russian) - again, because of the iambs.

Strangely, neither translation has the same syllable count as the original, which is 12 and 9 in 12 couplets, although Bugaeva has 9 and 3, which is reminiscent of the original.Ian Mac Eochagáinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08807587737403861042noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1197327729373608541.post-59599461090060809142015-05-04T02:54:26.739-07:002015-05-04T02:54:26.739-07:00Hi Sarah, thank you for your interest! But the V-ness of it came over splendidly, for some reason (and I've not spent any time re-listening or analysing) it seemed more fluid and V-ish. I would note that the very beginning also has aliteration with f (form following the function), which the French version also emulates (la forme qui résulte de la fonction), the Canadian French does not.

Of course one other factor of the impact is how much the V sound is normally used in whichever language it is anyway.

Here's another one, not sure which language it is, quite v-ish but not tons and certainly not as much as it reaches the slash-the-poster v-climax - Turkish?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zlZDn2ecoM
Siannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1197327729373608541.post-48715632450979222082014-01-12T00:14:20.893-08:002014-01-12T00:14:20.893-08:00Very interesting, even for non translators, especi...Very interesting, even for non translators, especially writers.
