We run a translation service in Freiburg (Southern Germany) and are currently offering an internship to a language graduate (preferably with an MA in translation) with the possibility of subsequent employment after the internship.

During the internship you’ll get a feel for the day-to-day work of a translator, including translating into your native language (English) as well into a foreign language, terminology work, research, project management, organizing interpreting assignments, tendering offers etc.

You must be a native speaker of English with excellent knowledge of German; we welcome French, Italian or Spanish as second languages. You should have some experience in translating technical (legal, economic,…) texts. Finally, we expect applicants to be competent at word-processing and using the web as a research tool.

Two internships (FR-EN translation; project management)

The translation company STP Nordic is offering trainee placements for a project manager and for a French to English translator. The placement is unpaid but there will be some reimbursement of travel costs. Details below.

French-English translator trainee placement at STP Nordic

STP Nordic is a UK translation company with its headquarters in Whiteley and further offices in London, Stockholm and Farnham, Surrey. The company has been providing translation services to and from the Nordic languages since 2000, and in 2012, we acquired a new unit that focuses on the translation of financial, commercial and legal texts from French and German into English.

We are now offering an internship in this English unit to an MA student of translation with English as their mother tongue and French as their main foreign language.

STP has 67 full-time in-house staff and is certified to the BS EN 15038 translation services standard. We are members of the ATC, ATA, ALC, the ITI, ELIA, GALA and the Swedish translators' association, SFÖ.

Placement dates

2-4 months. Until June 2013 in the Farnham office, July-December 2013 in the London office.

The placement is a structured period of work-based learning with extensive training in the use of translation environment tools. The trainees will work alongside our busy project management and English translation teams. The placement gives the trainees an excellent view of the translation industry and its tools along with invaluable experience in working in a translation company.

The trainee placement is unpaid, but STP Nordic can help with the trainees’ travel costs.

MA studies in Translation with French as the main foreign language. Native speaker of English. A high level of IT skills and knowledge of CAT tools is an advantage. Candidates will be asked to complete a test translation.

STAR in Dublin is offering internships for translation project management, beginning September for a period of 5-6 months. No details about remuneration.

Remote internship offered by Coalition for International Initiatives for a French or Spanish native speaker to translate their materials out of English. Minimum 10 hour a week commitment. Seems pro bono.

An advertisement in the Guardian for an experienced Project Manager in London. Posted today. No deadline given.

The company Synonyme in Madrid is advertising for a multitasking English native speaker with French, German or Spanish as interpreter, translator and project manager. Also looking for conference interpreters. Contact a.edwards at synonyme.net. Found on the website of the Chartered Institute of Linguists; other positions also advertised.

The pharmaceutical company Roche is looking for an English Sprachexperte for their language service in Basel (German-English translation, translation revision, etc.). Found via the ITI website. Further details here.

The company Comlogos is looking for a project manager based in Stuttgart. The company also seems from their website to offer internships. Other posts also regularly advertised.

In Europe, the EPSO competitions for Estonian, Irish, Latvian and Portuguese translators close on 14 August. The link is here. The deadline for translation traineeships in the European institutions beginning in March 2013 is 31 August. There are two rounds of these a year; more information here.

Two PhD studentships at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University for the academic year 2012-13. The scholarships cover fees and maintenance for the first year of study; may be extended subject to suitable progress, etc. 

There's a PhD studentship offered in Denmark in the field of intercultural business encounters which may interest translation researchers. Deadline is imminent: 15 August.

We are offering a versatile internship with a lot of opportunities to work independently. The Internship will primarily involve Editorial work with a contemporary literary text translated from the Arabic, though the successful applicant will have an overview of the entire publishing process. This is a great opportunity for those looking to begin a career in publishing, as you will gain an insight into the operations of a publishing house, as well as valuable contacts and hands-on experience.

Applicants must have a Masters degree or the equivalent or higher from a UK HEI, or be enrolled in a PhD programme at a UK HEI, and be able to secure a leave from studies for the period of the internship. Eligibility follows AHRC PG studentship guidelines.

The successful applicant will have excellent written and spoken English, good communication and organisational skills, be proficient in MS Office and have a passion for publishing and literature in translation, particularly Arabic literature. Experience in Arabic-to-English literary translation is desirable. 

The internship provides a monthly stipend based on AHRC guidelines. The internship holder will be expected to provide a short final report in writing before receiving the final instalment of the stipend.

2012 DGT competition for EN translators

I am happy to pass on the news from the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation that

the European Personnel Selection Office will launch a competition in July to recruit English-language translators for the European Union institutions. Applicants must be citizens of any EU Member State, have a bachelor's degree in any discipline and be able to translate from two EU official languages (one of which must be French or German) into native-speaker-standard English.

DE-EN in-house posts: traineeship and senior translator

Osborne Translation Services in Sheffield are seeking an in-house translator from German to English for an extended traineeship to begin in summer 2012:

During the Trainee Programme, you will translate selected projects from a variety of business areas covering the whole range from marketing to technical manuals and software translation. You will be trained on various Translation Memory systems. In this period, you will receive coaching from highly experienced translators and support from the entire team. For graduates specialising in technical translation, this represents a great opportunity to gain experience in translating in a dynamic and “controlled” environment.

The role is initially be based at our office in the heart of Sheffield for a period of four months.
If this first stage is successfully completed to our full satisfaction, the trainee will advance to a second six-twelve month stage (depending on individual circumstances) involving greater responsibility, and including the option of gaining several months’ in-office training at beo in Stuttgart, Germany or at Matrix in Munich, Germany or any of their subsidiaries.

After completion of the traineeship, there are multiple full-time employment opportunities, depending on your fields of interest and skills

apprenticeships for translators

There's a nice piece on Sarah Dillon's blog There's something about translation on apprenticeships. I thought it might be of interest to those of our readers thinking about internships and work placements in translation.

Internships in translation and interpreting

Just saw a passing tweet from Uwe Muegge about internships at the International Criminal Court which include internships for translators and interpreters (standard UN official languages including one, and ideally both, of English and French). Site is a bit bare of information but interested readers may want to investigate.

There was a nice piece in the ITI Bulletin this month by a graduate who had done a translation work placement at the Directorate-General for Translation in Brussels. This is a really good scheme and applicants who meet the criteria (BA degree in hand; two source languages including one of: English, French, German, etc.) should consider applying. Applications for next autumn open on 3 January 2012 and close on 31 January 2012. (see details under 'When?').

Project management positions in London

TranslateMedia in London are advertising for a German-speaking project manager. The successful candidate will be a confident linguist, with a professional attitude to service, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Excellent communication skills are necessary along with an eye for detail, and a high level of linguistic and IT skill.
The right candidate will be a project management professional with experience in translation and related technology and have experience managing translations. The successful candidates will be have native level German plus excellent spoken English. Familiarity with translation technologies and formats is preferred; Translation memory tools, .html, .xml, InDesign, Photoshop etc.

They are also advertising for a junior project manager, and for a 3-month + project management internship (unpaid but with some expenses reimbursed). Some more posts also on their website. 

Volunteer internship in San Francisco and job in Wiesbaden

MBETraining and Translations are hiring a permanent in-house German to English translator and trainer in Wiesbaden.

The microlending organisation Kiva is looking for a part-time translation volunteer co-ordinator in San Francisco, three days a week for six months from 3 October, to work with its 300 translation volunteers. Please note that this is an unpaid internship. Kiva are looking for speakers of French, Russian, Portuguese or Spanish.

internship at UNOPS in Copenhagen

The UN is looking for a translation intern for the Communications Unit of UNOPS headquarters in Copenhagen for an October start. Applicants must be French native speakers translating from English and maybe Spanish as well. The internship is expected to last 4-6 months from October and is unpaid. The deadline for applications is 30 September.

Am forwarding this because it sounds like excellent work experience for the right candidate, but I am slightly wondering who would possibly be able to afford to work for free for 4-6 months, even with the promise of a greatly enhanced CV afterwards...? Hmmm. Any thoughts from readers of this blog, on internships, paid, partly paid or otherwise...?

Translation and Terminology traineeships at the European Parliament

I have just seen an advertisement for a translation traineeship in the terminology department of the European Parliament. It seems to be part of the European Parliament's general traineeship scheme; interest in the terminology traineeship should be stated in the application.

Some details about the general traineeship scheme (more details here):

Paid traineeships are awarded solely to graduates of universities or equivalent institutions. Their purpose is to enable trainees to supplement the knowledge which they acquired during their studies and to familiarise themselves with the activities of the European Union and, in particular, the European Parliament.
Applicants for a paid translation traineeship must:

• be nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of a candidate country (Croatia, Iceland, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro or Turkey);
• be aged 18 or over on the traineeship starting date;
• not have been awarded any other paid traineeship, or have been in paid employment for more than four consecutive weeks, with a European institution or a Member or political group of the European Parliament;
• have obtained, before the deadline for the submission of applications, a university degree after a course of study of at least three years' duration;
• have perfect knowledge of one of the official languages of the European Union or of the official language of an applicant country and thorough knowledge of two other official languages of the European Union.

Paid translation traineeships are awarded for a period of three months. On an exceptional basis, they may be extended for a maximum period of three months.
