Bristol students in translation news this week

It was a really nice start to the teaching year to find not one, but two of our students in the translation news this week.

Hayley Wood, a student on the MA in Translation, was commended by the judges in the Birkbeck/And Other Stories Sample Translation Competition for her translation from Alexandre Postel's Un homme effacé. The competition was a collaboration between the Birkbeck 'Use your language, use your English' translation summer school and the independent publisher And Other Stories. The judges were translators Ros Schwartz, Roland Glasser, Margaret Jull Costa and  Francisco Vilhena and editor Sophie Lewis. Warmest congratulations to Hayley! :)

Meanwhile Charis Fisher, a final-year undergraduate student in the School of Modern Languages, published a very interesting piece in the latest edition of The Linguist, the professional journal of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, which can be read online here.  

On her placement with UPS Translations this summer, Charis came across a scam (which was certainly a new one on me) whereby the CVs of professional translators are downloaded from online translation portals, the contact details are replaced, and the CVs are then submitted to translation agencies with the scammer's own email address and covering email. Charis was alerted by the odd inconsistencies between the very professionally-produced CVs and the poorly phrased and formatted covering emails. The article offers some practical hints to companies and to translators on how to protect themselves. For more on scams affecting translators, see the Proz scam alert board. Many congratulations to Charis too for making such good use of her placement and for this contribution to the translation community.

The Chartered Institute of Linguists: Translating Division is delighted to announce that Peter Clark, a well-known translator of contemporary Arabic novels into English, will be introducing an evening of excerpts of contemporary Arabic writing in the original and in English translation; he will speak about both the cultural context of Arabic-into-English translation and specific technical challenges.

The London-based Sudanese poet, Al-Saddiq al-Raddi, will then talk about translating poetry, and Sarah Maguire, the Director of the Poetry Translation Centre, will read her translations of some of Al-Saddiq’s poems. The Palestinian novelist, Selma Dabbagh, lives in London and writes in English: she will speak about language choices in expressing Arab consciousness. Finally, Sarah Maguire will read a short story in Arabic by the UAE writer, Muhammad al-Murr, and Peter Clark will read his own translation.

There will be ample opportunity for members of the audience to ask the speakers questions throughout the evening, and particularly during the break.

Tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available before the evening begins and during the break.

An advertisement in the Guardian for an experienced Project Manager in London. Posted today. No deadline given.

The company Synonyme in Madrid is advertising for a multitasking English native speaker with French, German or Spanish as interpreter, translator and project manager. The pharmaceutical company Roche is looking for an English Sprachexperte for their language service in Basel (German-English translation, translation revision, etc.). Found via the ITI website. Further details here.

The company Comlogos is looking for a project manager based in Stuttgart. The company also seems from their website to offer internships. Other posts also regularly advertised.

In Europe, the EPSO competitions for Estonian, Irish, Latvian and Portuguese translators close on 14 August. The link is here. The deadline for translation traineeships in the European institutions beginning in March 2013 is 31 August. There are two rounds of these a year; more information here.

Two PhD studentships at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University for the academic year 2012-13. The scholarships cover fees and maintenance for the first year of study; may be extended subject to suitable progress, etc. 

There's a PhD studentship offered in Denmark in the field of intercultural business encounters which may interest translation researchers. Deadline is imminent: 15 August.

ITI forthcoming translation events

 Three Institute of Translation and Interpreting events are coming up which may be of interest to readers:

1) JOINT ITI / EU / CIOL CLEAR WRITING SEMINAR

Thursday 5 July 2012, 10.00 to 16.00

This seminar is organised jointly by the ITI and the Chartered Institute of Linguists. It is generously supported by the European Commission Representation in the UK and will be held at its offices in Smith Square in central London.

The event is aimed at all translators who are keen to improve the clarity of their written language and will include presentations by representatives from the Plain English Commission, Clarity and the European Commission’s Directorate General for Translation, as well as a number of practical exercises.

Martin Cutts (Research Director at the Plain Language Commission and author of Lucid Law and the Oxford Guide to Plain English).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What equipment do I need to attend a webinar?

You need a PC with a reasonably fast broadband connection and speakers. A microphone is not necessary unless you are invited to speak. You can ask questions by typing them.

Who is organising the webinars?

The Translating Division Committee of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. The Institute itself is not responsible for the webinars. The Translating Division Committee is made up of volunteer translators. We are mostly freelancers, and do this in our spare time.

If I have to cancel, can I get a refund?

Due to the high amount of administration involved we do not anticipate giving refunds for cancelled places except in exceptional circumstances. You may transfer your fee to another webinar in the future.

What is the deadline for payment?

Please try to make your payment 72 hours before the date of the webinar. Our systems are not fully automated and require manual input, so you need to allow time for this.

Why are you not including Trados in your workshops?

The answer is that Trados has recently brought out a new suite of software, Trados Suite 2009. We have not yet been able to find a trainer of our own to present a similar workshop to those above. Furthermore, demonstrations and training courses have recently been made widely available by the vendor.

Can I download the webinar to view later?

Unfortunately not at the present time.
