The School of Modern Languages at the University of Bristol welcomes enquiries about post-doctoral research in related disciplines, including Translation Studies, from potential applicants.

A variety of schemes are available in the United Kingdom, including schemes run by the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust and the European Commission (e.g. Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowships).

Specialisms within Translation Studies at the University of Bristol include literary translation across all the languages offered in the School of Modern Languages (see, for instance, here, here and here); subtitling, audiovisual translation, multilingualism in film (see e.g. here, here and here); theatre and performance; adaptation; translation in medieval French culture; translation history (see e.g. here, here, here); interpreting and mediation (especially with Chinese);

Research Assistant (Italian-English Interpreter/Translator)

The Department of Education at the University of York is seeking a Research Assistant to work on a research project funded by a Departmental Pump Priming Fund to Dr Paul Wakeling and Dr Benedetta Bassetti. The project will explore perceptions of English society among Italian immigrants in the UK and perceptions of Italian society among Italians. The post will involve recruiting unpaid interviewees in selected Italian locations, conducting ten one-hour interviews in Italian (by telephone or skype), and producing written English translations of interviews. The RA will be working from home and communicating with the project team by email and skype.

You should be a native or near-native speaker of Italian, have a Laurea, BA or equivalent degree in Translation, Interpreting, Languages or a related discipline, experience of translation work, and good knowledge of Skype and Word. Undergraduate students with demonstrable experience of translation can also apply. A proactive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills are essential. Experience of interviewing and an understanding of social issues are desirable.

The ten interviews should be completed between 1 June and 31 July 2013. The RA will be paid £100 for each completed and transcribed interview.

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate to work with Professor Jean Boase-Beier on the AHRC-funded project Translating the Poetry of the Holocaust. This part-time post (60%FTE), which is available from 1 August 2013 to 31 January 2014, will involve multiple tasks including: locating and evaluating examples of Holocaust poetry in languages other than German or English; organising public events in Norwich and London; attending project meetings. You must have a reading knowledge of one European language besides English (and other than German), a first degree in a relevant subject, and a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in a related field.

Summary
The Department of Classics at KCL is appointing a full-time AHRC-funded Post-doctoral Research Associate in Classics and Class 1789-1917 (project Principal Investigator: Professor Edith Hall). The post will be located at the Strand Campus of King's College. It is a fixed-term appointment for three years, starting 1^st January 2013.

The Researcher will have experience at either BA or PhD level of both Classics and  Classical Reception.  Likely profiles will involve a BA/MA in Classics & English, Ancient & Modern History, or Classics, with a Humanities PhD addressing social history, UK/Irish archives, or 18^th-19th-century Classical Reception. The Researcher will work closely with Edith Hall in metropolitan and regional archives and libraries investigating both published and unpublished materials relating to the working-class experience of ancient Greece and Rome, especially English-language translations. S/he will be expected to liaise closely with the archivists and librarians, and copy, collect and collate copies of relevant materials. S/he needs a commitment to disinterring lost voices in the social record, and to working collaboratively. S/he will also liaise with the members of the project's advisory board, and organise two workshops to present results to them in 2014 and 2015. S/he will co-edit the anthology of materials which will constitute one of the project's primary outputs, and supervise the recording of the project's podcasts and videoed presentations. S/he will develop a specialist research interest within the field of his/her own, leading to publication. The Researcher will also be responsible for initiating and maintaining the project's website and publicising its activities.

KU Leuven Postdoctoral Fellowship
Call for Applications

One twelve-month postdoctoral fellowship is available for the 2012-2013 academic year. The award will offer a qualified researcher the opportunity to develop his or her curriculum vitae while engaging in the completion of a significant piece of publishable research. The researcher will work independently but alongside a doctoral student and under the supervision of a full-time professor. The researcher will also work in collaboration with the FP7 Marie Curie ITN TIME (see: http://eu-researchprojects.eu/time).

Aims

The research will focus on the role of translation policies in the integration of linguistic minorities (including immigrants). This area of research is largely a blind spot in current research on language policies, especially outside of Western Europe. Consequently, the research will focus on the translation policies of one or several non-Western European nation-states. The aim of the project is to shed light on translation policies outside of Western Europe, particularly in areas where there are important migratory forces and regional linguistic minorities.

Eligibility

1. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. between January 2007 and the approval of this application. They must not be tenured scholars.

2. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. from an institution other than the KU Leuven. They must have at least one degree in Translation Studies. Applicants will preferably have another degree in a different field, e.g. in law, public administration, economics, political science, or a comparable field.

3. Applicants must be able to carry out their research full time out of Leuven, Belgium, for one year.

Qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, color, age, sex, sexual orientation, or nationality. Researchers with international backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply.

Research Associate: Intercultural Communication

University College London - European Languages

Part Time : 21.9 Hours per week (60% FTE)

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £31,905 - £38,594 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work with Dr Claire Thomson on an Intercultural Communication project, which is attached to the UCL Knowledge Transfer Champion initiative. This will involve undertaking a research project investigating effective design and modes of delivery of Intercultural Communication in the context of Continuing Professional Development (CDP) for Small and Medium Enterprises in the local Tourist Industry.

This post is funded for 7 months and will start as soon as possible in January 2012 (specific dates to be confirmed).

Applicants should have near-native-speaker proficiency in at least one modern foreign language and hold (or be in the process of writing up and submitting) a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant field. Experience of teaching modern foreign languages in a Higher Education context is essential, as is knowledge of current scholarship on the relationship between cultural identity and language. Experience in the tourism sector would be advantageous, as would knowledge of enterprise, knowledge transfer or public engagement within a university context.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to assist the lead academic in the ‘First Kicks: translating early sources on the cancan’ project. You will aid in the identification of relevant French primary sources held in online repositories, translate these sources from French into English, and assist in assessing the necessity and viability of further archival research in Paris.

Your enthusiasm for this role and the research topic will be supported by excellent knowledge of French language and current professional translation practices. A qualification in translation studies (or equivalent) with extensive experience of translating French into English is essential. Translation skills in 19^th-century French would be desirable. You must have experience of undertaking an academic literature search using online catalogues and repositories and of producing translations that are suitable for academic publication.

In addition, you will need demonstrable administrative and time management skills and good communication and listening skills. You will also show initiative and have the ability to work both independently and within a team to achieve the overall aims of the project.
