ITI forthcoming translation events

 Three Institute of Translation and Interpreting events are coming up which may be of interest to readers:

1) JOINT ITI / EU / CIOL CLEAR WRITING SEMINAR

Thursday 5 July 2012, 10.00 to 16.00

This seminar is organised jointly by the ITI and the Chartered Institute of Linguists. It is generously supported by the European Commission Representation in the UK and will be held at its offices in Smith Square in central London.

The event is aimed at all translators who are keen to improve the clarity of their written language and will include presentations by representatives from the Plain English Commission, Clarity and the European Commission’s Directorate General for Translation, as well as a number of practical exercises.

Martin Cutts (Research Director at the Plain Language Commission and author of Lucid Law and the Oxford Guide to Plain English).

Portsmouth training event Friday 27 January, and CPD in general

Just writing with a quick reminder that today is the last day for registration for Friday's training event on project management and quality assurance, led by Raisa McNab of STP Nordic. Venue: Park Building, University of Portsmouth. 

This got me thinking about CPD in general. There's something about the initials 'CPD' which is somehow doughy, leaden and dull. This is a pity because it refers to lots of things which are interesting, lively and informative.

This summer there are no less than three literary translation schools taking place. There is the long-running British Centre for Literary Translation Summer School in Norwich (22-28 July 2012) where there will be workshops from French, German, Spanish, Norwegian, Dutch and Japanese into English, and English into Italian.

The second Use your Language, Use Your English summer school will take place in London (9-13 July). It will feature workshops translating into English from Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, as well as an editing skills course.

In Australia there is the Translation Transnation Literary Translation Winter School and Festival at Monash University (3-7 July) where the working languages will be Chinese, Japanese and Italian.

(I note with pleasure that Italian is the only language represented at all three summer schools. Proper order.)

Many professional associations run talks, one-off workshops and training webinars - we have been involved in the past with eCPD webinars who seem to have an excellent lineup. I see that they also offer a free webinar about CPD on a budget which I must take a look at. Many other organisations are also offering webinars; Twitter seems to be a good place to hear about them.

There are also many talks and presentations by literary translators on their work (for instance, I see in New York a series of seminars on reading translations run by no less than Edith Grossman).

Alas, New York is not an option for me right now, but this year my plan is to attend at least one webinar, and at least one 'live', place-specific training event. All suggestions of fun training events and seminars are welcome in the comments.

The SFT regularly offers a one-day course on how to set up as a freelance translator (practical information on admin, fiscal and accounting basics + how to find good clients). We'd be grateful if  teachers on this list relayed the info below to anyone they think might be interested.

ADVANCED SUBTITLING WORKSHOP

There are still places available for the Advanced Subtitling workshop being held by the Translation Group at Imperial College on the 14^th May. This is open to professionals as well as students.

Course Content

From the European Parliament to Walt Disney, from film dialogue to song: a hands-on workshop on interlingual subtitling. The course will start with a brief review of the main theoretical and practical issues concerning interlingual subtitling, as well as of the main features of the subtitling software in use (WinCAPS), as a reminder to those who participated in the previous workshop and an introduction to those who did not. This will be followed by a more hands-on workshop during which the participants will have the opportunity to work with a number of different audiovisual texts. 

Some of the time will be devoted to working on the English texts, practising segmentation, condensation and other relevant techniques, while some of the time will be devoted to their translation into the target language of choice. Depending on the language pairs chosen by the participants, some material might be provided in other languages for translation into English. Some time will be left at the end for questions. A list of useful websites and other sources of information will be given to all the participants.

This message is to announce that registration has opened for Medical Interpreting Online (CompLit 552).  Please be advised that the first 28 students to register will be admitted. The class is invariably full, so those registering early improve their chances of being admitted. Class begins on Jan 19, 2011. The class is all online all the time, so you may do the work anytime from anywhere as long as you have a computer and can connect to the Internet.

The one semester course covers consecutive interpreting, sight translation, and telephone interpreting. Course content includes ethics, standards of practice, terminology building (anatomy, pediatrics, dental, labor, internal, orthopedics, cardiology, AIDS, neurology), medical procedures, threaded discussions, consecutive interpreting, and sight translation. Texts are by Angelleli, Mikkelson, Chavez, plus selected journal articles.  The instructor is Edwin Gentzler, Professor of Comparative Literature and Director of the Certificate Program in Interpreting Studies, and the lab assistant is Rio Hernandez, a graduate student in the MA in Translation Studies program and an experienced interpreter.

The class is multilingual, with most of the major languages included. Students passing the course will receive a certificate in Medical Interpreting issued by the Translation Center and are eligible for either 3 hours of academic credit. The course serves as one of the trainings recognized by national certification organizations such as IMIA in the process of becoming certified. The class is open to interpreters, translators, bilingual health care providers, nurses, doctors, emergency room personnel, intake coordinators, community educators, counselors, therapists, social workers, community support services personnel, and anyone interested in improving the quality of bi-lingual health care.

Javier Gil, former head of the Spanish Translation Services at KPMG Spain for around 5 years, now works as a self-employed translator with a number of international private companies and organisations. He has recently been selected as an External Translator for the European Central Bank and also has experience delivering workshops and seminars at universities in various countries.

workshop at Portsmouth on Translation Memory, 10 September

The ITI Wessex regional group in association with the University of Portsmouth is organising a one-day, hands-on workshop on Translation Memory software. The trainer will be Daniela Ford MITI, a certified Trados trainer. The training day will take place on Friday 10 September from 10 to 5 at Park Building. The venue is close to Portsmouth & Southsea train station (see www.port.ac.uk/maps). The syllabus will cover an introduction to the theory and a hands-on workshop on Déjà Vu and Trados 2009 Studio. It will also make a good opportunity for networking. The workshop is suitable for both trainee translators and working professionals who wish to improve their knowledge of TM. The event meets the ITI's CPD criteria and certificates will be available.
