Research Assistant (Italian-English Interpreter/Translator)

The Department of Education at the University of York is seeking a Research Assistant to work on a research project funded by a Departmental Pump Priming Fund to Dr Paul Wakeling and Dr Benedetta Bassetti. The project will explore perceptions of English society among Italian immigrants in the UK and perceptions of Italian society among Italians. The post will involve recruiting unpaid interviewees in selected Italian locations, conducting ten one-hour interviews in Italian (by telephone or skype), and producing written English translations of interviews. The RA will be working from home and communicating with the project team by email and skype.

You should be a native or near-native speaker of Italian, have a Laurea, BA or equivalent degree in Translation, Interpreting, Languages or a related discipline, experience of translation work, and good knowledge of Skype and Word. Undergraduate students with demonstrable experience of translation can also apply. A proactive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills are essential. Experience of interviewing and an understanding of social issues are desirable.

The ten interviews should be completed between 1 June and 31 July 2013. The RA will be paid £100 for each completed and transcribed interview.

Summary
The Department of Classics at KCL is appointing a full-time AHRC-funded Post-doctoral Research Associate in Classics and Class 1789-1917 (project Principal Investigator: Professor Edith Hall). The post will be located at the Strand Campus of King's College. It is a fixed-term appointment for three years, starting 1^st January 2013.

The Researcher will have experience at either BA or PhD level of both Classics and  Classical Reception.  Likely profiles will involve a BA/MA in Classics & English, Ancient & Modern History, or Classics, with a Humanities PhD addressing social history, UK/Irish archives, or 18^th-19th-century Classical Reception. The Researcher will work closely with Edith Hall in metropolitan and regional archives and libraries investigating both published and unpublished materials relating to the working-class experience of ancient Greece and Rome, especially English-language translations. S/he will be expected to liaise closely with the archivists and librarians, and copy, collect and collate copies of relevant materials. S/he needs a commitment to disinterring lost voices in the social record, and to working collaboratively. S/he will also liaise with the members of the project's advisory board, and organise two workshops to present results to them in 2014 and 2015. S/he will co-edit the anthology of materials which will constitute one of the project's primary outputs, and supervise the recording of the project's podcasts and videoed presentations. S/he will develop a specialist research interest within the field of his/her own, leading to publication. The Researcher will also be responsible for initiating and maintaining the project's website and publicising its activities.

EU recruiting translators for fixed-term contracts

EU to recruit translators as contract staff in 23 languages
		The European Union is looking for translators in all 23 official EU languages to work in the translation departments of all the EU institutions. The successful applicants will be recruited for a fixed period of up to 3 years, often with a shorter initial contract of 12 months depending on the type of job. Posts will be available in Luxembourg and Brussels. The new recruits will translate political, legal, economic/financial, scientific and technical texts covering all EU areas of activity, from agriculture and internal market to energy and employment. The work entails translation from at least two foreign languages (including one of English, French or German) into the translator’s main language, as well as revision of translations and terminology research. These tasks require intensive use of IT tools. Who can apply? Recent doctoral graduates in translation may be interested in the post-doctoral research fellowships currently being advertised at the University of Nottingham which is also about to launch a new Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies.

The research fellowships are aimed at exceptional postdoctoral researchers in any academic discipline represented at the University. In 2012, six Fellows will be recruited to start this two-year Fellowship programme. One Fellow will be recruited to each of the University's five Faculties, with a sixth excellent individual also being recruited.

1) APGRD Research Associate (French Translations of Greek and Roman Drama)

Applications are invited for the above one-year, full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral Research Associate position, attached to the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama’s (APGRD) ‘Translating Greek and Roman Drama’ research project, funded by grants from the Mellon Foundation and the John Fell Fund of the University of Oxford from 1 September 2011 to 31 August 2012. The project is based at the APGRD, Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, 66 St Giles’, Oxford OX1 3LU. The postholder will provide research assistance to the Principal Investigator, Dr Fiona Macintosh (Director of the APGRD), and will work towards the creation of an online searchable database of all translations of ancient plays into French from the early modern period to the present, in France and in all francophone countries.

There is the possibility of a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa:

The Department of Language Management and Language Practice at the University of the Free State has a possible two-year postdoc of ZAR200,000 per annum to offer in translation studies. Preference will be given to African students working on the development of translation studies in Africa, preferably from a sociological or intercultural perspective, but the selection panel may also consider other candidates. in-house position DE-EN and DE-EN translation recommendation

Just saw this pointer to a temporary in-house contract in Berlin for a German-English translator. The deadline is 15 September.

Which reminded me that on my recent holiday I finished reading Hans Fallada's Alone in Berlin (original German title Jeder stirbt für sich allein) in Michael Hofmann's translation. It reads very like a translation in that the style is entirely un-English, but it is also beautifully crisp and comprehensible (and lightly footnoted, which I haven't seen in a translation for a while). Plus, the characters are fantastically drawn and the story gripped me from the first page. Just sayin'.
