The School wishes to appoint a Senior Lecturer to contribute to the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching portfolio in the field of Translation Studies. Applicants will be a native or near native speaker of English, able to translate from Chinese, German, or Spanish into English. They will be expected to have the ability to contribute to language teaching in their other main language.

Applicants will be expected to have proven experience of teaching Translation Theory & Practice, Specialised Translation, Research Methods and dissertation supervision. Areas of specialism that are particularly welcome are sub-titling, translation technologies or corpus linguistics.

The successful candidate will be expected to take on the Course Leadership of BA (Hons) Applied Languages within the full-time undergraduate provision, contribute to campus and distance learning programmes at postgraduate level, and undertake high quality research / knowledge transfer. A PhD (or nearing completion) is essential.

The successful candidate will be research and/or knowledge exchange-active. S/he will be expected to contribute to the School and/or the Centre for European and International Studies Research’s (CEISR) profile in these areas. CEISR is the largest interdisciplinary centre for research on Europe and the wider world in the UK and was ranked first for research power in the 2008 RAE.

Two internships (FR-EN translation; project management)

The translation company STP Nordic is offering trainee placements for a project manager and for a French to English translator. The placement is unpaid but there will be some reimbursement of travel costs. Details below.

French-English translator trainee placement at STP Nordic

STP Nordic is a UK translation company with its headquarters in Whiteley and further offices in London, Stockholm and Farnham, Surrey. The company has been providing translation services to and from the Nordic languages since 2000, and in 2012, we acquired a new unit that focuses on the translation of financial, commercial and legal texts from French and German into English.

We are now offering an internship in this English unit to an MA student of translation with English as their mother tongue and French as their main foreign language.

STP has 67 full-time in-house staff and is certified to the BS EN 15038 translation services standard. We are members of the ATC, ATA, ALC, the ITI, ELIA, GALA and the Swedish translators' association, SFÖ.

Placement dates

2-4 months. Until June 2013 in the Farnham office, July-December 2013 in the London office.

The placement is a structured period of work-based learning with extensive training in the use of translation environment tools. The trainees will work alongside our busy project management and English translation teams. The placement gives the trainees an excellent view of the translation industry and its tools along with invaluable experience in working in a translation company.

The trainee placement is unpaid, but STP Nordic can help with the trainees’ travel costs.

Requirements

MA studies in Translation with French as the main foreign language. Native speaker of English. A high level of IT skills and knowledge of CAT tools is an advantage. Candidates will be asked to complete a test translation.

Translation Project Coordinator trainee placement at STP Nordic

STP Nordic provides translation services to and from the Nordic languages, English and German. Based on the south coast of England, we translate millions of words every year for other translation companies around the world. Edinburgh workshop on translation, trauma and silence

‘Translation, Trauma and Silence’:
A Work-in-Progress Workshop

This workshop aims to provide scholars, working in different disciplines and in different languages, with an interdisciplinary forum in which to explore the intersections between translation (understood in its interlingual, multimodal and metaphoric senses), trauma and/or silence.

Contributions are invited from scholars from any discipline whose work intersects with one or more of the broad themes translation, trauma and/or silence.

Issues and challenges addressed might include the textualization of trauma and of silence, the mediation of traumatic experience, (mis)communication, distortions, corrections and loss, censorships, exposures and revelations, the ethics of speaking and of knowing, and different cultural coding of silence or trauma. Concerns regarding the limitations, the frustrations and the potential of words will be at the forefront of the workshop.

Sessions may take the form of paper/discussion, panel discussion or more informal workshop: proposals for hour-long sessions are welcomed. We would particularly welcome contributions from postgraduates and contract researchers.

The workshop will include contributions from two keynote speakers:

Prof. Jean Boase-Beier (University of East Anglia): ‘Translating Celan’s Silences’

Prof. Máiréad Nic Craith (Heriot-Watt University): ‘The Silence of the Polyglot: an Inarticulate Darkness’

Proposed outcomes:

•       to identify synergies between existing theoretical and methodological approaches to translation, trauma and silence;

•       to explore interdisciplinary approaches that critique current theories and methods;

•       to open up new avenues of research and facilitate potential collaborations;

•       to generate ideas for channels of knowledge exchange;

•       to support a larger funding bid to the AHRC on translating Holocaust testimonies
